Read “Cold, Cold Science” in your Reading book, pages 392-400. On a sheet of paper, answer the following questions. Remember to CITE TEXT EVIDENCE to support your answer. Head your paper correctly.

1. Page 394 - Why isAntarctica so important to life on Earth, even though it is located far away from most places on the planet?

2. Page 394 - What is the difference between an ice shelf and an ice sheet?

3. Page 394 - Why do the ice shelves form?

4. Page 395 - Why is it important for scientists to study the glaciers and ice shelves of the Antarctic?

5. Page 396 - How might very strong wind change the shape of rocks?

6. Page 396 - Why do you think people have not settled in Antarctica?

7. Page 396 - What is the main idea of this section? What key details support that idea?

8. Page 397 - Think back to what you learned about krill in Antarctic Journal. What do you think is one reason scientists in Antarctica want to learn how climate change affects krill? 

9. Page 397 - Remember that informational texts can be organized a number of ways. How is this text organized - sequentially, by cause-and-effect relationships, or by topics with main ideas and details?

10. Page 398 - How are seals and whales similar? How are they different?

11. Page 399 - Why is the shores good place for some penguins in Antarctica to nest? Use information from page 399 and from Antarctic Journal.

12. Page 399 - How does food supply affect an animal population?

13. Page 400 - What evidence do scientists have that Antarctica was not always a cold desert? Explain why this evidence suggests a very different climate.

14. Page 400 - According to some scientists, how have people changed Earth’s atmosphere? What are some ways to reduce pollution?

15. Page 400 - Is this a firsthand account or a secondhand account? How can you tell? How is this selection different from Antarctic Journal?

Review vocabulary, pages 372-373. Think about the meaning of each word. If you can’t remember the meaning of a word, look it up in the glossary of your textbook, pages G2-G17 (in the very back of your book).

Math: Lesson 6-4, continued. Find the product of a 2-, 3-, or 4-digit number and a 2-digit number, with regrouping. Workbook pages 83-84. When you finish, send me a screenshot of both pages.

Science: What are air masses? Pages 190-193.

Vocabulary: Write a sentence of your own, using each of the 12 vocabulary words for Unit 6 correctly. Head your paper. Example: “Please do not distract me while I am working on my homework,” pleaded Jimmy.


5th Grade:

Read “Pea Island’s Forgotten Heroes” in your Reading book, pages 282-284. On a sheet of paper, answer the following questions. Remember to CITE TEXT EVIDENCE to support your answer. Head your paper correctly.

1. Page 283 - What does realization mean as used in the text? What context clues halo you determine its meaning?

2. Page 284 - Why did the surfmen ignore their own needs even though they were also cold and wet?

3. Page 284 - Why did both Katie Burkhart and the descendants of the surfmen feel proud when the surfmen were finally recognized as heroes?
